A quick historical fact: The basics of the mail-order concept began back in 1744 started by Benjamin Franklin, according to the the National Mail Order Association (NMOA.org), and he also was credited with offering the first mail-order guarantee: "Those persons who live remote, by sending their orders and money to B. Franklin may depend on the same justice as if present."
The first real mail-order catalog was issued by Aaron Montgomery Ward, on August 18, 1872. It was a simple one sheet of paper with a price list and designed to help rural farm families who otherwise made purchases thru traveling salesmen or visiting the big city. Ward's catalog company changed how people made purchases by offering clothing, furniture, hardware to rural customers, who were more than happy to do so. Buying directly from stores in Chicago and having products delivered by mail to their homes proved beneficial, thus offering cost savings by avoiding the middleman.
With the Internet, a company's website has become a popular way to shop for merchandise. The term "mail order" is slowly going away and e-Commerce lends a new way to present virtual catalogs. Merchants are looking at all ways to improve their means of retaining customers, some enjoy catalogs, some embrace the Internet's convenience. Either way, shopping from home has it's rewards.
